Eunith - Cost of Waiting

Jul. 2021

“Cost of Waiting” is the first official music video I created for Eunith. Matthew invited me over to listen to a bunch of songs he planned on releasing, and this one stood out to me right away.

After listening to it, a story popped into my mind of a lonely engineer wanting to build a robot companion in his garage workshop. Matthew approved of the idea and we got started!

Directed by: Keaton Punch

Bobby the Robot is the first original character I’ve ever created! I wanted him to have a charming and DIY look to him for this music video. I spent roughly three weeks building the costume from carboard, thrifted old electronics, various plastic pieces, and a ton of hot glue. I used LED lights for the heart and eyes, and a smart phone screen for the mouth. Although it turned out like I wanted, the costume was hot to wear and only had very limited visibility.

As soon as the robot costume was done, we all got to work on cleaning out and set designing Matthew’s garage. I used blue and green lighting to push that cyber aesthetic. The old TVs plus various other tools and electronics helped make the space feel much more lived in.

One of my favorite details is Bobby’s mouth lighting up in sync with the song. I did this by animating a flashing white screen to match up with the song. I sent that animation to my smart phone and placed the phone screen behind the mouth in Bobby’s head.

I used soft, cool lighting in the lonely scenes to keep a cohesive look anytime it cuts away from the garage scenes. I also designed a fake cereal box brand called “Robot-O’s”, featuring Bobby on the cover.
