Tiny Desk Contest - Video Submissions

Mar. 2023

Each year NPR has their Tiny Desk Contest for any band or artist in the U.S. to record a live performance of an original song. This year, I wanted to give Bakersfield’s music scene a fighting chance!

So, I decided to work with a handful of bands and artists I knew in town to film and edit their video submissions for them!

I used stylized lighting for each video, to compliment the band’s aesthetic and boost the production value with the little time I had.

To make each video interesting to watch, I captured every performance using two camera angles. I always operated the wide angle, and found a friend to operate the close-up angle. Everything handheld to add that extra energy.

For the majority of these videos, I decided to film inside the artist’s or band’s own home! I did this to give each video a more personal feel, and to also challenge my lighting/cinematography skills in random new settings.

Fortunately, many bands and artists already had their own audio recording setup! So, I was able to let the bands handle the audio side of their production while I could put all my focus on video.
