HATE DRUGS - Too Many
Aug. 2022
I pitched the idea for this music video to David Caploe from the band HATE DRUGS, in an effort to experiment with an interesting visual effect.
The concept is simple: The band performs the entire song while sitting in a circle around the camera. The camera endlessly pans to reveal each band member, while seamless jump cuts and cloning effects are integrated as the song progresses.

It’s physically impossible to achieve this visual effect manually, so I used an edelkrone HeadONE to do it mechanically. My camera mounts to this motorized device, which allows for repeatable camera pans with perfect accuracy. Because of this, I’m able to record multiple takes of the band and cut between or combine any take with accurate timing in the song.
I chose to film in this room because I liked the unique structure and décor it already had. The corner of windows would help create more depth in the image, along with the open rooms in the other direction.
I worked with David to develop the color theme of this video. He wanted to push that neon green color, so I made that the key light using several of my Nanlite PavoTubes. Then I accented it with deep blue lighting in the background for more color contrast. Lastly, I asked the band to all dress in light or white clothing so that the light can add those tints of color from the room on their outfits.
